How
it works ...
Solar
Domestic Hot Water
Integral Collector Storage Tank
(ICS)
In an integral collector storage
system, water is stored on the
roof in an
insulated tank or set of large
tubes which absorb solar energy.
This system
transfers the water heated by
the collector to your indoor
tank. Pressure
supplied by your home's existing
water main circulates the water
from the
rooftop collector to the indoor
storage tank.
ICS systems use no pumps and
electronic controls that require
maintenance
and consume electricity.

Thermosiphon System
Thermosiphon units are a
completely passive design that
relies on buoyancy
effects as opposed to pumps and
controllers to circulate fluid
through the
collectors.
When sunlight strikes the
collectors in a closed-loop
SunSiphon system it heats
the food-grade antifreeze within
them, which then rises due to
buoyancy into
the jacket-style heat exchanger
on the bottom of the storage
tank. Here the
antifreeze transfers heat into
the tank, becomes cooler, and
sinks to the
bottom of the collectors to
repeat the process.
Thermosiphon systems have
insulated storage tanks which
dramatically reduce
nighttime losses. Thermosiphon
systems use no pumps and
electronic controls
that require maintenance and
consume electricity.

Active Systems
An active system also has a
flat-plate collector on the roof
and a solar storage
tank which is usually located in
a garage or utility room. An
electric pump
circulates the water between the
collector and the indoor solar
storage tank
whenever solar energy is
available and needed to increase
the temperature of
the water in the solar storage
tank.
Active systems have the lowest
nighttime losses. Performance
may be better
than systems which use no pumps.
These systems require the least
visible
array of equipment on the roof.
